How is ILO promoting Employment in the Alternative Construction Materials value chain in Mozambique
ILO, the government of Mozambique and the government of Sweden have been promoting Decent Work in Mozambique through the MozTrabalha Project. One of the strategies to promote employment for youth, women and men in the rural areas of Mozambique was to use EIIP - Employment Intensive Investment Programmes.
After extensive consultation with partners, the alternative construction materials value chain was identified as having great potential for creating jobs.
The MozTrabalha 5-year project (2017-2022) has conducted feasibility studies and promoted the use of soil cement blocks for its many advantages including: reduced environmental impact, higher employment creation, local resource based, easy access in rural areas, resilience to natural disasters, existence of in-house capacity, an alternative to fire brick makers to move into Decent work employment.
