Food security & 2026 Agriculture Budget
Food security does not begin and end on the farm. It begins with the choices we make in our budgets.
In Nigeria’s ₦58.47 trillion national budget, agriculture is losing priority. Its allocation has fallen to just 2.59% from 4.62% in 2025.
While a significant share of the allocation is directed to the National Agricultural Development Fund, much of it is concentrated in a single fertiliser programme, leaving other critical areas underfunded.
This imbalance raises an important question. Are we investing where it matters most?
