South Africa is leading a Just Energy Transition (JET) to shift from coal to cleaner, more sustainable energy. The goal is to reduce emissions while supporting workers and communities, creating new jobs, helping coal-dependent regions, and ensuring reliable, affordable electricity for all. Coal has powered South Africa’s economy, industries, and cities for decades. Today, the system faces major challenges: aging plants, frequent power cuts, and rising social and economic needs. As Africa’s largest emitter and one of the world’s most carbon-intensive economies, this transition has global significance. Agence Française de Développement (AFD) supports the JET by mobilising public and private resources and coordinating with international partners. In 2021, France committed €1 billion through three targeted loans. AFD works closely with the International Partners Group, civil society, academia, private actors, and other development banks to ensure a comprehensive, inclusive approach.
