Information as a right: what's holding us back?

Information as a right: what's holding us back?

The concept of ‘information as aid’ is underpinned by the rights to information, expression and participation. Yet the humanitarian sector’s approach to information, two-way communication and accountability is too often self-serving, designed to fit programmatic and donor objectives rather than recognising and fulfilling affected people’s rights. Additionally, the contexts in which humanitarians operate may make it difficult to explicitly adopt rights-based approaches to practice and advocacy around information. This panel discussion and Q&A, which took place at Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Weeks (HNPW) 2023, explores how we can navigate those constraints and seize opportunities for broader collaboration to uphold the agency, dignity and rights of affected people.
