Tipping Points 30 - Beyond Aid
Key conservation programmes are endangered by large-scale funding cuts by Europe and the US. Conservationists are having to regroup, to pursue the private sector, form transnational alliances, and, in a radical departure from what would have been considered mere months ago, look east for funding.
Join our expert panel on the next Tipping Points webinar, which will be facilitated by Rendani Nenguda, Senior Research Associate at Oppenheimer Generations Research and Conservation, an extensive funder of conservation research.
The panellists are: Kishaylin Chetty, head of sustainability at the Endangered Wildlife Trust, Danny Govender, head of sustainability at South African National Parks, and Shameela Soobramoney, CEO of the National Business Initiative.
Shameela Soobramoney is CEO of the NBI, leading efforts in social and environmental sustainability. Formerly the Chief Sustainability Officer at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), she spearheaded its Sustainability and Climate Change Disclosure Guidance initiative. She has chaired global and national sustainability groups, including the World Federation of Exchanges’ Sustainability Working Group and the National Treasury’s Sustainable Finance Working Group.
Danny Govender heads up the Sustainability portfolio at South African National Parks. As a conservationist, with over 20 years of experience as a veterinarian, scientist, and science manager in the Kruger National Park, she has experienced firsthand the positive impact biodiversity and intact habitats provide to society. She is encouraged by the goals set out by the Kunming Montreal Biodiversity framework, and the reimagining of financial systems to support a nature-positive economy, but more importantly how that translates to real changes.
Kishaylin Chetty is Executive: Head of Sustainability at the Endangered Wildlife Trust, with over 15 years of expertise in environmental and social governance. He advises South Africa and the SADC region on biodiversity policy and represents the country globally through the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services and the International Union for Conservation of Nature. He champions nature-based solutions and innovative conservation finance, and forges high-impact partnerships across Africa.
Rendani Nenguda is a Senior Research Associate at Oppenheimer Generations Research and Conservation, an extensive funder of conservation research and has worked for environmental sustainability for years. Through the team at OGRC's efforts, they have promoted and grown the preservation of African ecosystems.
