Magnifica Humanitas: Catholic Thought for the Digital Age
On May 25, Pope Leo XIV released his first encyclical, "Magnificent Humanity," which reflects on artificial intelligence and the protection of human dignity. The much-awaited encyclical sets a sweeping vision for the future of AI, extending well beyond theology and laying out specific recommendations that prioritize human flourishing and dignity, ranging from safety regulation to job-retraining to education.
Featuring Vilas Dhar of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, Kim Daniels of Georgetown University's Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life, and Josh Good of the Religion & Society Program, with moderation by Vivian Schiller of Aspen Digital, this panel explores the document's commentary on artificial intelligence and the protection of human dignity. As fast-moving technologies continue to reshape lives and livelihoods, how has the letter been received? What impact might it have—including in the technology sector? In a global, interconnected society, how does the Catholic Church view its responsibility to cultivate human well-being and stand in solidarity with “least of these”?
