Consolidation and Competition in the Marketplace
Today’s healthcare marketplace is becoming increasingly consolidated as health systems swallow up hospitals, purchase physician practices, and merge with other health systems. Private equity and other corporate entities are significant players here, especially as buyers of physician practices. Consolidation can lead to higher prices but the impact of these ownership trends on quality of care and access to services is debatable. The risk of diminished competition is real but so is the possibility that outside capital can keep some rural hospitals open and economies of scale can generate cost savings.
