Choosing Freedom - Girls Against Child Marriage in Tanzania

Neema and Bernadetta chose freedom over forced marriage. Their acts of defiance brought them together and to acting. Through theatre, they inform their Sukuma community in Katavi, Tanzania, of the dangers of child marriage, inequality, and violence against girls. This unique documentary footage by Kijiweni Productions takes us up close to the chagulaga tradition and the two girls who took a stand against it. Neema and Bernadetta are Champions of Change through Plan International Canada’s Adolescent Girls’ Health and Rights project with Plan Tanzania and Global Affairs Canada. Tanzania has the 14th-highest rate of teen pregnancy in the world. The project will directly help 147,000 girls access better care, information, and opportunities. Plus, in spreading useful health information and shifting norms that harm women and girls, the project will indirectly reach an additional 714,000 people.
