The Price of Dreams
At just 15, Ngân dreams of studying, singing, and choosing her own future—but her path has already been decided. In rural Vietnam, where tradition still holds sway, her marriage has been arranged through Tu Vi astrology, her dowry quietly negotiated. To question that fate is to challenge everything she’s been taught to accept. In her community, nearly 60% of people were wed before the legal age—most of them girls.
This is the first observational-style documentary in our Embedded Storytelling series—an approach that captures real moments as they unfold. Directed by Hà Lệ Diễm, the award-winning filmmaker behind Children of the Mist (shortlisted for an Academy Award), The Price of Dreams continues her signature style: intimate, immersive, and deeply respectful.
From feeding chickens and planting seeds to scrolling her phone in solitude, Ngân straddles two worlds—the customs that shape her daily life, and the growing awareness of possibilities beyond them. One scene between Ngân and her teacher was revisited during filming. It’s an unscripted re-enactment of a real conversation they had several times before. Speaking in their own words, nothing was scripted. This ethical documentary practice helps fill narrative gaps without altering the truth. The goal is authenticity, not performance.
Quiet Resistance, Shared Strength
Without casting heroes or villains, the film reveals the quiet emotional work of adaptation: a mother uncertain how to guide her daughter through change, teachers who balance tradition with encouragement, and a girl who navigates her culture gently but bravely. Set against understated melodies, The Price of Dreams offers a deeply human look at coming of age during cultural transition.
Ngân is one of 8,184 sponsored children in her community, supported through a Plan International program launched in 2007. She’s also part of Champions of Change, a youth-led club where girls and boys stand together to speak out against child marriage and support each other.
Watch now to experience Ngân’s journey—and ask yourself what you’d do if your dreams came with a price.
The closing song Ngân sings—“The Road You Take to School”—is from Đường Em Đến Trường.
