Strengthening Outbreak Notification and Response (SONAR) in Madagascar

In Madagascar, the plague is a real and present danger, accounting for 75% of the world’s cases. To combat this, Madagascar's Ministry of Health and The Task Force for Global Health, with support from the Global Fund, launched SONAR (Strengthening Outbreak Notification and Response) - and a key initiative called the Model Villages project. Using the One Health approach, a cross-functional strategy that aims to improve global health by addressing the links between humans, wildlife, vegetation and the ecosystems they share, communities are working together to address the plague. They are rat-proofing homes, organizing community cleanup campaigns and building better waste management systems. Over 400 frontline workers were trained to detect early warning signs. Since June 2024, these Model Villages have reported zero plague cases, even as neighboring districts continue to struggle. Community-led early warning systems are making a real difference in building a safer, healthier future: #GlobalHealth #DiseaseSurveillance #OneHealth
