Strengthening Outbreak Notification and Response (SONAR) in Malawi

After a record-breaking cholera outbreak in 2023, Malawi began transforming its disease surveillance to save lives. In partnership with The Task Force for Global Health, with support from the Global Fund, Malawi is strengthening early warning systems. They are training local community members and leaders to detect and report priority health alerts immediately, equipping health workers with tablets for real-time reporting to speed up the detect-report-response cycle, and implementing monitoring tools to improve response times. In late 2024, quick action contained a measles outbreak in Mangochi to just 126 cases, while another outbreak in Machinga was halted with zero reported deaths. By combining national support with local action, Malawi is ensuring that diseases are caught early and contained fast, creating a safer, healthier world for everyone. #HealthSystems #DiseaseSurveillance #HealthSecurity
