Costa Rica joins CAFI - A unique South South partnership on Payments for Environmental Services
On 5 June 2025, Costa Rica officially joined the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI).
Renowned for having reversed deforestation and increased its forest cover from 26% to 58% in 25 years, while ensuring economic growth and social inclusion, Costa Rica brings to CAFI unique expertise in Payments for Environmental Services (PES) - a performance-based mechanism now at the heart of the climate strategies of several Central African countries.
Costa Rica's entry into CAFI comes at a decisive time: the Central African partner countries are currently developing roadmaps towards COP30 in Belém (Brazil), testing PES approaches on a regional scale and deploying cutting-edge technological tools to manage PES.
At a time when recent data from 2024 reveals an acceleration in the loss and degradation of tropical forests, including in Central Africa, this demonstration of solidarity sends out a strong and hopeful signal.
