Copernicus Ocean State Report 9 - Press Briefing (23/09/2025)
To mark the release of the 9th edition of the European Ocean State Report, Mercator Ocean International hosted a press briefing to share its key findings with journalists. The report is produced by the Copernicus Marine Service, which Mercator Ocean International implements on behalf of the European Commission.
The briefing featured:
- Richard Gilmore, Policy Officer at DG DEFIS,
- Pierre Bahurel, Director-General of Mercator Ocean International
- Karina von Schuckmann, Senior Advisor and Director of the Copernicus Ocean State Report
Highlights from the report:
- Every part of the ocean is affected by the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
- The ocean is hotter than ever: globally, sea surface temperatures reached extreme highs in 2023 and 2024, after decades of warming.
- Changes to the ocean affect nature, food production, economies, human livelihoods and the global climate.
- Authored by 60 scientists from Europe and around the world.
The Ocean State Report series is a reference publication of the European Union designed to support policy-makers, environmental agencies, regional sea conventions and international organisations such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United Nations. It provides a four-dimensional view of the ocean through satellite data, in situ measurements, and advanced reanalysis systems, offering insights into the blue (hydrography, currents), white (sea ice), and green (chlorophyll) components of the global ocean and European regional seas.
