Advancing Child-Centered AI: Practitioners and Partnerships - Frontier Data Network Event
UNICEF’s Frontier Data Network convened a panel on “Advancing Child-Centered AI: Practitioners and Partnerships” on June 18, 2025 at UNICEF Headquarters in NYC.
The event brought together leaders from the UN system, national governments, researchers, and the private sector to explore the essential role of AI, data, and partnerships in shaping a future where technology works for the most vulnerable, especially children.
Vidhya Ganesh, UNICEF Director, Division of Data, Analytics, Planning and Monitoring (DAPM), opened the panel by highlighting the ways in which AI-powered algorithms and generative AI already influence children’s experiences – from what they see online to their mental wellbeing. She noted that “AI is also transforming the world of data, from analytics to dissemination, from data cleaning to data generation.”
Panelists included:
Ana Jiménez de la Hoz, Deputy Permanent Representative of Spain to the United Nations
Katherine Macdonald, Senior Director, Ookla for Good & Strategic Initiatives
Dr. Merav Ozair, Leading Expert on Emerging Technologies and Responsible Innovation
Dr. Mehdi Snene, AI and Digital Transformation Senior Advisor, Digital and Emerging Technologies, United Nations
Stefaan Verhulst, Co-founder & Chief of Research & Development, The GovLab at New York University
