Inside the Wildlife Translocation Journey to Sioma Ngwezi National Park
As we continue to celebrate WWF@65, we share a video featuring our Senior Wildlife Officer, Shadrach Mwaba, who gives insights into the wildlife translocation process, from the source population, where experts conduct DNA sequencing to confirm genetic suitability and carry out disease risk assessments, to the careful movement of animals to the receiving population.
The journey continues beyond release, with post-transplantation monitoring ensuring animals adapt and thrive in their new environment. This science-led approach reflects WWF’s 65-year commitment to protecting wildlife, restoring ecosystems, and securing a future where people and nature live in harmony.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our partners, the Zambian Government through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), the Barotse Royal Establishment, Peace Parks Foundation, Global Affairs Canada (GAC), and the International Institute for Sustainable Development, whose collaboration made the successful translocation of 185 wildlife into Sioma Ngwezi National Park possible. This achievement truly demonstrates that #Togetherpossible conservation impact is greater.
