Meet the Atlanta Beltline, one of the 2025–2026 WRI Ross Center #PrizeforCities finalists 🏆 leading the way for more sustainable, inclusive and healthy #cities.
Once an abandoned freight rail, this 22-mile loop through Atlanta, 🇺🇸, has become a vibrant network of trails, parks, affordable housing and local businesses. Since the project’s start in 2012, the Atlanta Beltline has:
🧩 Connected 45 historically divided neighborhoods
🏭 Cleaned up 73+ acres of former industrial land
🌳 Planted 7k+ trees across 470 acres of new green space
🏘️ Created or preserved 6.3k+ affordable housing units
🚶 Served 2M+ annual visitors
For cities around the 🌎, the lesson is not to copy the Beltline, but to emulate its community-centered values and inclusive approach.
