Bibnetz: Sustainable Connectivity for Berlin’s Public Libraries
Bibnetz is transforming Berlin’s public library system by connecting 70 library locations across all 12 districts to fibre infrastructure and equipping them with modern digital workstations. Previously, strong disparities existed between branches — some had powerful online services while others had minimal or no internet connectivity. Working with nationwide telecom provider 1&1 Versatel GmbH, the project delivers uniform, high-quality internet access of 1–10 Gbps, ensuring every resident can access reliable digital services regardless of district.
The initiative creates equal opportunities for learning, research and digital participation by upgrading devices, improving Wi-Fi coverage and harmonising digital offerings across the city. With enhanced access to online catalogues, digital learning tools and remote work capabilities, Bibnetz strengthens the social, educational and cultural role of Berlin’s libraries.
