🧭 As the Pact on Migration and Asylum approaches entry into force in mid-2026, the focus has shifted firmly to implementation. Member States are aligning legislation, upgrading IT and judicial systems, strengthening administrative capacity, and preparing to meet new procedural timelines. The Pact introduces a permanent solidarity mechanism and aims to streamline asylum procedures while reinforcing border management. As discussed at ICMPD's last Vienna Migration Conference, its success will depend on flexible cooperation, continuous technical support, monitoring and evaluation, and shared commitment to managing migration as a routine governance issue rather than a perpetual crisis. The proposed Return Regulation and the Pact for the Mediterranean further reflect the EU’s effort to balance efficiency with fundamental rights, while addressing the diverse needs of Member States and partner countries. 🎥 During the Conference, Beate Gminder, Director-General at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, underlined the political significance of this reform: “This Pact is about managing migration through clear rules within the European Union, where there was a real need to reform and update our laws.
