From the Margins to the Center: The History of the "Lesbian Tent" to Today

Thirty years ago, in 1995, lesbians from around the globe gathered outside the United Nations’ 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing, China to assert that lesbian rights are human rights at the now-iconic “lesbian tent.” Today, lesbians – and LGBTIQ people from everywhere – are frequently inside the United Nations, actively shaping policies on gender equality and advocating for the rights of lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and intersex women. This transformation, from the margins to participating at the center of international decision-making equally with others, stands as a powerful testament to the resilience and determination of activists who refused to be silenced.
