How migrants power the jaggery mills of Maharashtra | Sugar mills | Seasonal migration | India

Maharashtra is the second largest producer of sugar in the country after Uttar Pradesh. While about 3 lakh farmers cultivate the crop in Maharashtra and another 2 lakh workers work in sugar factories, an additional 15-16 lakh seasonal migrants arrive in the sugar belt region for sugarcane harvesting and transportation. A large number of migrant workers, mainly from districts of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh also arrive at jaggery processing mills to work in the processing chain. From collecting the sugarcanes to feeding the crushing units and processing the jaggery to packaging it, these workers are present at every stage of processing. Journalist Shivaji Thorat visits 3 different jaggery processing units in Marathwada region– a small mill in Jalna, a medium unit in Aurangabad and a large one in Beed – to understand this whole process, while also talking to the workers about their roles in these mills.
