After long shifts: Inside migrant workers’ after hours | Labour Day | Leisure | May 1 | India
Leaving behind the safety and comforts of their family and native places, migrant workers traverse long distances in search of job opportunities. Starting a new life in destinations with a different language, culture, good and traditions can be extremely challenging especially for vulnerable communities like these workers. They toil hard to make ends meet and send a major share of their income as remittances at the cost of their own comfort and social security. Yet, in many ways than one, they take efforts in their own capacities to explore these new destinations. Through food, films, local site-seeing and making new friends, they try to make these new places their own.
This Labour Day, The Migrations Story speaks to migrant labourers across Chandigarh, Mumbai and Ahmedabad to explore their ideas of leisure. On a given off day or in the after-work hours, how do workers spend their time.
