City for city makers: How can city governance account for the workers building its infrastructure?
As cities expand its boundaries and infrastructural developments take its course, workers migrate to take up the various opportunities that open up. But as cities begin to grow, the increasing cost of living and lack of basic facilities for its workers hinders their life in the city. While they become the backbone of infrastructural developments, the policies, governance structures, organisations and citizens need to come to together to support the workers and improve the facilities provided.
At Groundswell, the first annual convening by The Migration Story, we conducted a panel discussion on the same, bringing together voices from the policy makers, experts, government and community workers. Our panelists included:
Tikender Panwar - urban scholar, policy analyst, and former Deputy Mayor of Shimla city
Ravi Pandey - Urban governance specialist, Government of Uttarakhand
Dipali Bhoite - City Coordinator at Mahila Housing Trust
Shagufta Niyaz Ali Saiyyad — a Vikasini and Paryavaran Sakhi in Amalner with Mahila Housing Trust.
Anil Petwal - Additional Labour Commissioner, Government of Uttarakhand.
Mandvi Kulshreshtha, Senior program adviser, Friedrich-EbertStiftung (India), who also moderated the session.
