Missing narratives: The women Gulf migrants from Kerala | Malabar | Migration | India

The phenomena of Gulf migration from Kerala, especially the Malabar region is well documented. The remittances from these migrant workers form a major share of Kerala’s GDP. Yet, a niche that is underexplored in this phenomenon is the voice of the women migrants. Women from the Malabar region take this arduous task of migration, mostly as domestic workers, to support their families back home. They face immense challenges in clearing the travel procedures, finding safe spaces for their children or other dependents, and arranging for money to support the travel. But their woes do not end there. Their wellbeing in the Gulf is completely dependent on their sponsor/employer. Most of them face extreme hardships at the hands of employers who do not provide even the basic facilities. In many cases they also face abuse and torture. Yet they are left with little avenues to find a way back home. In this video, The Migration Story reporter Fathima Rena speaks to multiple women migrants from the Malabar region of Kerala, who found a livelihood in the Gulf amidst harrowing experiences, yet find little space in the broader narrative of migration from Kerala.
