Autos and iconic “kaali peeli” taxis form the backbone of Mumbai's everyday movement, but what happens when the very drivers who keep Mumbai running are pushed into a restrictive and uncertain work environment? The recent confusion and chaos surrounding the Marathi language mandate has left many of the drivers anxious about their future. A large number of these drivers are migrants from outside Maharashtra, many of whom do not speak Marathi fluently, let alone write or read the language. For them, the mandate threatens their ability to earn a living.
