Of Homecoming & Heartbreak in Bundelkhand
Every festival, Bundelkhand's migrant workers take 36-48-hour train rides in general compartments or cramped buses to reunite with their families, bringing with them hard-earned money, the fuel for festivals and daily living for their families. On January 15, 2026, during Makar Sankranti, widely celebrated in the region as Khichdi, The Migration Story captured Kandhora village's bittersweet celebrations amid Dalit basti power cuts. Homes glowed with multani mitti, cow dung floors, and saffron dyes to welcome returnees; villages brimmed with homemade sweets, feasts, and neighbourly visits.
But joy fades fast. Husbands and sons leave once the festivities are over for the grind of the city, while women stay back to shoulder agricultural and care work. Once back to the city grind, the men must save up to travel home for the next festival.
