From Punjab to Australia | Manmeet Bedi
In 1885, a young man left the golden mustard fields of Punjab to begin a new life beneath Australia’s Southern Cross.
Years later, in 1947, his grandson Teja followed - carrying the same courage, faith, and hope that had guided his family before him.
Generations later, Teja's grandson, Manmeet Bedi set out to research, locate and tell his family’s story. He recently released an illustrated children’s book - Where the Mustard Fields meet the Southern Cross - that not only documents his family’s history but also establishes the complex migration stories of the past and why they need to be told in a polarised world.
On this podcast, Simit Bhagat, founder of The Bidesia Project, which documents the history of indentured labour through the dying art form of folk music, speaks to Manmeet Bedi about his motivation to tell this story.
