Strait of Hormuz Chokes India's cooking gas supply, endangering thousands of livelihoods
India imports 60% of its cooking gas — and 90% of those imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz. With the US-Israel-Iran conflict disrupting supply, the government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act, prioritising households over businesses.
Small restaurants and street vendors — many of whom just switched from coal to LPG to beat Delhi's pollution rules — are now caught between a rock and a hard place.
A restaurant owner near Jama Masjid told us: coal is back on the stove. Another fears dishes will be cut from the menu — or the shutters will come down for good.
