Fewer workdays, no wage | MNREGA | VB-GRAM-G Act | Rajasthan | Migration | India
Seven years ago, women in Rajasthan’s Patan Pura village came together to demand work under MGNREGA, ensuring jobs for at least 200 women in the village, as men migrated to Gujarat and MP for work, from the rocky, hilly and dry village.
What followed changed the village — from roads and water-harvesting structures to financial security for the women left behind.
Now, as MGNREGA transitions to VB GRAM G, many fear losing the one programme that guaranteed them work and income. This summer, rising temperatures, a lean agriculture period and LPG pressures coincide with fewer workdays and technical hurdles in the new wage scheme, shrinking rural livelihood options in rural India.
In a statement issued last month, the NREGA Sangaharsh Morcha, a coalition of workers registered with the job guarantee scheme, said that VB-GRAM G generated less than one crore jobs this April compared to 10.5 crore jobs in April last year. “Wage payments have also stalled, with nearly 10,000 crore rupees pending and almost no payments cleared since January 21, 2026,” it said.
