When the salt turns brown | Migration | Gujarat | Kutch | Salt pans | India | Climate Crisis
In Gujarat’s Little Rann of Kutch, Agariya salt makers depend entirely on one season’s harvest to survive the year. But freak rains, cyclones, and dust storms are repeatedly flooding salt pans, turning white salt muddy brown and destroying carefully prepared fields and damaging solar infrastructures.
But despite these recurring losses there is no set framework in place to calculate the loss incurred and how it can be compensated.
Last year, the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute recommended that the government assess losses and compensate affected workers and also provided a detailed framework, but the government is yet to review it.
