One Dose, One Cure: African scientists leading the charge

‘I tell African women: we are capable of working in science. It’s not just for men.’ 👩🏾‍⚕️ This #InternationalWomensDay, we spotlight Dr Hélène, a Congolese researcher who has dedicated her career to fighting neglected diseases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 🛖 For decades, a positive sleeping sickness diagnosis meant being removed from your community for weeks to receive treatment far from home. A treatment so toxic it killed 1 in 20 patients. 🔬 Dr Hélène and her colleagues helped change that reality. Working with communities across the DRC, she helped run the clinical trials that made it possible to develop acoziborole — a one-day oral treatment course of three pills that could help make sleeping sickness elimination a reality. 🙏 Her story is a reminder that scientific breakthroughs are made possible by the dedication of researchers working closest to the communities affected. 📽️ Over the next weeks, we will be sharing stories of some of those who played a role in making medical history, and what this milestone means.
