Jaqueline's story with leishmaniasis treatment

When Jaqueline was diagnosed with cutaneous #leishmaniasis at just 10 years old, she had to endure painful injections and walk 13km to receive treatment at the health unit 🏥 in Corte de Pedra, in Bahia, Brazil. More than a decade later, too many patients still face the same reality, along with the stigma of visible scars left by the disease 🦟. Current treatments often require weeks of injections with toxic drugs, and even the only oral option, miltefosine, is tough to tolerate and must be taken for a long time. Now a member of the Brazilian Association of Patients with Leishmaniasis (Abrapleish), Jaqueline says: patients need better options. They need treatments that are safe, affordable, and simple to use. 💊 And that’s what we are working on: our goal is to develop an entirely new generation of all-oral medicines that make treatment easier for every patient, everywhere. 🗺️ -------------- The Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) is an international non-profit developing safe, effective, and affordable treatments for the most neglected patients. https://dndi.org
