Allyship with Sex Workers | renew: South Asia Sex Workers’ Summit 2024
Over 200 sex workers and allies from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka gathered for the Renew Summit in May 2024. The event celebrated the power of collectivization and the resilience of sex worker movements in advancing civic rights and breaking systemic barriers. A key outcome was the issuance of the Kathmandu Declaration, which calls upon governments, multilateral agencies, the United Nations, civil society organizations, and policymakers to:
- Commit to advancing sex workers’ rights
- Recognise sex work as work and uphold sex workers’ rights as human rights
- Ensure dignity, safe working conditions, and non-discrimination for sex workers.
- Reflect sex workers' lived experiences in laws and policies.
- Guarantee accessible, quality healthcare for all.
- Secure equal rights for children of sex workers.
- Acknowledge sex workers' role in reducing HIV, STIs, and trafficking.
- Commit to active solidarity with sex worker movements
This summit and the resulting declaration mark a significant step toward fostering a more inclusive and rights-based approach to addressing the issues faced by sex workers in South Asia.
