ICoCA AGA 2022 - Handling People in Vulnerable Situations - C. Myrianthopoulos & L. Cohn Pelaez
Through a research project, Cleopatra Myrianthopoulos and Luis Fernando Cohn Pelaez explore the harrowing conditions at Manus Island and Moria camp in Lesvos, exposing widespread human rights abuses. Moria, designed for 2,800 but housing 20,000 migrants, faced severe issues including violence by guards, inadequate healthcare and gender-based violence. Manus Island, used by Australia as an offshore processing centre, saw riots, mental health crises and poor living conditions. Through 18 qualitative interviews, they uncovered vulnerabilities faced by women, children, LGBTQ individuals and single young men, highlighting systemic issues like lack of training, accountability and proper planning. This research underscores the urgent need for comprehensive, humane management of migration detention centres.
