ICoCA AGA 2022 - Handling People in Vulnerable Situations - Matthew Currie

In this presentation, Matthew Currie, Research and Policy intern at ICoCA, delves into the complex implications of outsourcing migration management to private entities and the resulting human rights abuses. He explores the extensive involvement of private security companies in managing migration, particularly in detention centres, border control and deportation services. These companies oversee migrants in prison-like conditions, guard borders, transport migrants and even conduct operations at sea, raising serious ethical and human rights concerns. While states turn to these companies for perceived cost efficiency and flexibility, issues such as forced labour, inadequate healthcare, mental health problems and violations of non-refoulment obligations persist.
