ICoCA AGA 2022 - Improving Working Conditions in Private Security - Caleb Wanga

Caleb Wanga, Coordinator at Usalam Reforms Forum, stresses the importance of representation for human rights of private security workers, noting that Kenya alone has around 1.2 million people in the private security sector. Mr. Wanga discusses the need for a robust regulatory framework, citing Kenya’s Private Security Regulation Act of 2016 as a step forward but highlights the weak implementation and compliance issues. He points out the severe challenges workers face, such as low wages, lack of unionisation, inadequate equipment and dangerous working conditions. Mr. Wanga underscores the necessity of strong internal grievance mechanisms and the broader global community's role in addressing these human rights issues.
