The remarkable story of Holocaust survivor Léonie de Picciotto
Every year on 27 January, the international community commemorates International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This date was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly to mark the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp in 1945.
Marking the Day at UN Geneva on Tuesday, Holocaust survivor Léonie de Picciotto shared her memories of wartime Holland, which was overrun by German forces after a five-day battle in May 1940.
The story that 87-year-old Léonie tells is remarkable, from her daring escape from the Amsterdam nursery where she was being held with other Jewish children, to the two years spent hiding in plain sight with a family in rural Holland – until German troops moved in to hold back the advancing Allied forces…
