"At First, I Was Just Trying to Survive" | From Refugee to Entrepreneur

In 2016, Jane Sadia fled South Sudan with nothing but her determination to rebuild. Today, she runs a small agribusiness in Kiryandongo refugee settlement in Uganda. She leads a youth group that grows vegetables, rears livestock and sells produce at local markets. She has completed her first bankable business plan. And she knows her costs, her customers, and her numbers. "At first, I was just trying to survive. Now I think like a businessperson." Jane's transformation is the result of a partnership between the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), and the Mastercard Foundation, working across 15 districts in Uganda's refugee-hosting communities to turn informal agribusiness micro-entrepreneurs into investable enterprises. Through UNCDF's local partners (Safe Plan Uganda, the Innovation Village, Quest Digital Finance, and Asigma), entrepreneurs like Jane are accessing business skills training, digital recordkeeping tools, seed grants, and working capital loans. With a target of reaching 20,000 agribusiness entrepreneurs by November 2026, this partnership is demonstrating how productive digital credit can be especially transformative for women, youth, and refugees building toward a more secure and dignified future. @WorldFoodProgramme @MastercardFoundation 🔔 Subscribe to follow UNCDF's work in MSME finance and catalytic capital across Least Developed Countries and fragile settings worldwide. 🔗 Read our new Strategic Framework: https://www.uncdf.org/strategic-framework Get involved: 🔗 UNCDF: https://www.uncdf.org 🔗 Follow on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/uncdf 🔗 Follow on X: https://x.com/UNCDF 🔗 Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/uncdf 🔗 Follow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UNCDF 🔗 Follow on Threads: https://www.threads.com/@uncdf 🔗 Follow on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/uncdf.bsky.social #uncdf #unitednations © UN Capital Development Fund 2026.
