Rapa Nui: an island where ocean protection is shaped by generations of Indigenous stewardship. Today, it stands as a powerful example of what’s possible when ancestral knowledge and modern technology come together. For generations, the Rapa Nui community has relied on artisanal fishing, practices rooted in deep cultural knowledge and responsibility for the ocean. In 2018, following Indigenous consultation and community leadership, a 700,000 km² marine protected area was established to safeguard these waters. But human eyes alone can’t monitor an area of that scale. That’s where Global Fishing Watch comes in. Working alongside the Rapa Nui community with tools like Marine Manager, we help make activity at sea visible and support informed decision-making that drives impact. Because you can’t protect what you can’t see. 👉 Learn more about our work in Rapa Nui: https://globalfishingwatch.org/fact-sheet/marine-manager-helps-protect-unique-ecosystem-south-atlantic-ocean/
