Creating a marine protected area is only the beginning. On Rapa Nui, fishing is more than a livelihood; it is a social and cultural system that shapes the community. But managing and protecting 700,000 km² of ocean comes with a major challenge: visibility. Before the marine protected area was established, there was little access to information about what was happening at sea. And without that visibility, effective protection is difficult. As Ludovic Burns Tuki explains, the real challenge lies in implementation, turning protection into meaningful action.
