Why is it important to know who owns fishing vessels?

Hidden vessel ownership means we’re not always holding the right people accountable for their actions at sea. Krizia Matthews, senior manager of international policy at Global Fishing Watch, explains that when vessel ownership is hidden behind shell companies or other complex corporate structures, enforcement efforts struggle to hold those truly responsible for a vessel’s actions to account. Beneficial ownership transparency helps change that. It reveals who is really profiting off of fishing activity, and who should be held accountable. Because you can’t enforce what you can’t see. 🎥 Filmed on the ground at the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation conference in Panama.
