Rapa Nui: Where life and the ocean are one

Rapa Nui: Where life and the ocean are one

On Rapa Nui, the ocean is more than a resource — it is identity, culture and life. For generations, the community has lived in deep connection with the sea, guided by ancestral knowledge and traditions that sustain both people and nature. But even in one of the most remote places on Earth, growing pressure from industrial fishing is being felt. In response, the Rapa Nui community established a 700,000 km² marine protected area, rooted in Indigenous leadership and a vision for the future. Today, that vision is being strengthened with new tools and data, helping make activity at sea visible and supporting better protection of their waters. This is a story of connection, and why protecting the ocean matters. 🔗 Learn more about our work in Rapa Nui: https://globalfishingwatch.org/fact-sheet/marine-manager-helps-protect-unique-ecosystem-south-atlantic-ocean/ #OceanConservation #RapaNui #MarineProtection #IndigenousLeadership #GlobalFishingWatch
