🏛️ EPISODE 3 – “Housing Challenges in the UNECE region”
By Paola Deda – Director of the UNECE Forests, Land and Housing division
In this episode, Paola Deda presents the expert findings behind the draft ministerial commitments on housing affordability and sustainability, later adopted during the UNECE housing ministerial meeting. She outlines the scale of the housing crisis: rising costs outpacing incomes, declining ownership rates, increasing pressure on rental markets, and the growing impact of short-term rentals on already scarce housing supply.
She highlights how housing intersects with climate, public health, social equity and economic stability and why integrated policies are urgently needed. From expanding public and non-profit housing to regulating speculation, improving data systems, and prioritizing energy-efficient retrofits, the message is clear: affordable, sustainable housing is essential for resilient cities and communities.
🎙️ Recorded during the UNECE 86th Session of the Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management (8-10 October 2025, Geneva)
