It’s been four years since President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele declared a state of emergency
Since then, authorities have detained more than 91,000 people, including children, often based on weak or unreliable evidence. The state of emergency has led to severe human rights violations including mass arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearances, and deaths in custody. Authorities should end the state of emergency and ensure prompt judicial review and fair trials.
