Biogenic carbon project Phase 2 kick off meeting | January 28, 2026

This meeting marked the kickoff of Phase 2 of the Biogenic Carbon Project, outlining the objectives, scope, and timeline for developing international guidance on biogenic carbon accounting in life cycle assessment (LCA). The project team reviewed Phase 1 outputs, discussed plans for drafting and iteratively refining recommendations through expert review and stakeholder consensus, and highlighted the importance of broad global participation, including engagement from developing countries. Participants also shared updates on closely related initiatives, including developments under the EU Environmental Footprint framework, GHG Protocol land sector and removals guidance, UK greenhouse gas accounting approaches, ISO standards, and product category rules for wood and bio-based products. These updates highlighted the growing need for alignment and harmonisation across methodologies for accounting biogenic emissions and removals. The session concluded with an overview of next steps for Phase 2, including the circulation of working drafts, opportunities for written comments, virtual expert discussions, and a call for organisations interested in pilot testing across a range of sectors. Stakeholders are encouraged to review upcoming drafts and actively contribute to shaping the project’s recommendations. Sign up to participate here: https://forms.office.com/e/RKvGXQzYXt
