Closing the gap: How MMS implementation research is enhancing quality pregnancy care in Nigeria

When women receive antenatal care, the support they get at health facilities doesn’t always carry through at home. An implementation research project led by the Government of Nigeria and Bauchi State in partnership with Nutrition International explored how community structures can strengthen continuity of care and help close the “adherence gap” that exists within maternal supplementation. In Bauchi State, mama-to-mama groups are one example of community structures helping connect these two worlds. Through peer support and home visits, women encourage each other to seek care early, stay engaged throughout pregnancy and follow recommended guidance, including taking multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) every day. By building on trusted local networks and centering women’s experiences, this work is helping inform how to strengthen antenatal care and support women throughout pregnancy and beyond.
