Environmental defenders across the globe are facing intensifying repression as states increasingly resort to legal and extra-legal tactics to silence protest. From strategic lawsuits and criminalisation to smear campaigns, incarceration, and even violence, activists advocating for a clean and healthy environment are under threat. This expert panel brought together leading scholars examining the criminalisation of environmental protest in both the Global North and South.
