POV: visiting Filesi’s farm in Malawi
Filesi is a smallholder farmer in Malawi. A single mother of four, she lives on her farm with her children.
Before joining One Acre Fund, Filesi harvested just five bags of maize from her farm and often had to work as a labourer on other people's fields to support her family.
Five years ago, she started farming with One Acre Fund, receiving fertilisers, seeds, and training.
“Joining the One Acre Fund program has been a game changer to my life as a farmer. I now have good quality seeds on time.”
Thanks to this support, Filesi transformed her farming practices, adopting improved techniques that increased her maize harvest from 5 bags to 20.
"The training was invaluable," Filesi says. "It taught me how to make informed decisions about my farm and improve my harvests.” *
By buying goats, planting groundnuts, and joining our Agroforestry Program to grow tree seedlings on her farm, she hopes this will improve her soil health, provide extra income, and protect her from the worst of the weather.
Alongside investing her profits into further expanding her farm, she’s also investing in her children’s future.
"I dream of my children accessing quality education and securing better-paying jobs to improve their livelihoods."
