The Weight of Hope

The Weight of Hope

She thought she was going to die. Her baby weighed 700 grams. In a small Ugandan village, a young mother named Margaret went into labour far too early. By the time her family reached Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital in Kampala, both mother and child were at the edge of survival. This is the story of what happened next — a 700-gram newborn, a postpartum stroke, a NICU built to save lives below 500 grams, and a quiet waiver system that carries families when the bills become impossible. Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital is a 450-bed centre of excellence serving mothers and newborns from across the region — including South Sudan, DRC, Kenya, and Rwanda. It stands as proof that survival is no longer a matter of geography, but a matter of design. Voices of Impact is a documentary series by the Islamic Development Bank Group, telling the human stories behind the projects we finance.
