Mozambique: AquaStart portable water treatment
Following the floods in southern Mozambique, the @EUcrisisresponse (EU ECHO) and the Government of Spain, through AECID, provided the AquaStart portable water treatment unit to support the emergency response.
Installed in Hokwe, Chokwe District, the system has been producing safe drinking water for accommodation centres and, progressively, for communities in return areas through water trucking, with UNICEF supporting operations and quality assurance.
As of 20 February 2026, a total of 1,287 m³ of safe water (1.29 million litres) has been distributed, reaching 85,800 people, with an average of 7,150 people served daily.
The AECID treatment unit alone contributed 306 m³, supplying safe water to approximately 20,400 people, while production capacity has increased from 20 m³/day to about 50 m³/day as operations stabilized.
Emergency support today, stronger preparedness for tomorrow.
