Child Marriage Story: Esperança

Child Marriage Story: Esperança

Esperança, who found out she was pregnant at the age of 15, is now 16 and the mother of a 7-month-old baby girl. Her future, which once seemed bright – with her dream of studying and becoming a nurse – is now filled with uncertainties. As soon as Esperança found out she was pregnant, her family forced her to get married. Thanks to the intervention of UNICEF and ICDP, a partner NGO, Esperança’s family came to understand that it was wrong to have compelled her to marry. Esperança was rescued from her child marriage and was able to return home. Today Esperança regularly participates in a self-help group led by a psychologist, and practices the Afro-Brazilian martial art, Capoeira, as part of the UNICEF-supported Capoeira for the Future.
